Our Story

McLeods Pearls of Manihiki is not just a business—it is our family’s legacy, woven together by passion, resilience, and love for the sea. Our journey began in 1989 when our father, George McLeod, took a leap of faith, inspired by his cousin, Tere Kauraka, to leave New Zealand and start a pearl farm in Manihiki. It was a decision that would shape our family’s future and connect us deeply to the ocean and its treasures.

Dad, along with John, Tama, and myself, arrived in Manihiki, ready to embrace this new adventure. John remained behind to train on Yves’ farm, while I returned in 1990 to join him. Over time, different family members came and went—our niece Lydia, our brother Dan and his partner, and later, our younger sister with her husband and children. But life in Manihiki was not always easy. In 1997, Cyclone Martin tore through our island, stripping us of materials, buildings, and so much of what we had built. Yet, we refused to give up. We rebuilt, piece by piece, with whatever resources we could find, driven by our unwavering belief in what we were creating. When Dad passed away in 2007, my brother John and I carried on, honoring his dream and commitment to pearl farming.

Our first major pearl harvest in 2003 gave us the cash flow needed to grow, allowing us to invest in expanding the farm. Every step we took was a labor of love—learning, refining, and perfecting the art of pearl cultivation. Today, John serves as Farm Manager and co-owner, while I, Apii McLeod, oversee retail operations as co-owner. Everything we know about pearl farming, we have learned through hands-on experience, and that deep-rooted knowledge allows us to bring truly exceptional pearls to the world.

Our Values

At McLeods Pearls, we don’t just cultivate pearls; we cultivate beauty, tradition, and stories. Our mission is simple: to create stunning pearls and transform them into jewelry that will be cherished for generations. There is no corporate slogan or mission statement—just a heartfelt dedication to producing pearls that hold meaning and memories for those who wear them.

Integrity and honesty guide us in every decision we make. Our pearls are cultivated with care, ensuring they meet the highest quality standards. Nearly every cent we earn is reinvested back into our farm, allowing us to sustain and improve our craft. We are proud to be both pearl farmers and retailers, giving us a unique connection to our customers and ensuring they receive pearls of true value and authenticity.

Our customers are people who appreciate the rarity and craftsmanship of genuine Cook Islands pearls—collectors, first-time buyers, and those searching for something truly special. We take pride in offering not only pearls but a story, a history, and a connection to the ocean. Through sustainable farming practices, we contribute to the longevity of the pearl industry in Manihiki, ensuring that future generations can continue to treasure these natural wonders.

Pearl farming is more than our livelihood—it is our way of life. Every pearl that we nurture carries the essence of our journey, our struggles, and our triumphs. If McLeods Pearls were a person, it would embody resilience, passion, and a deep love for the beauty of the ocean.
