a culture that evolves, not dissappears

we’re changing the tides

Our Purpose

To Tātou Akakoro‘anga

Taui‘anga Tai means Changing Tides, and in the Cook Islands, the tides of language, identity, and tradition are shifting fast.

According to UNESCO, Cook Islands Māori is classified as “definitely endangered”, with less than 10,000 speakers worldwide and even fewer who use it fluently in daily life. In our own homes, villages, and schools, we are witnessing the quiet fading of our reo, our stories, our taonga tuku iho (treasures passed down).

Taui‘anga Tai exists to turn that tide.

We are a grassroots movement rooted in aro‘a (love), identity, and cultural pride. Our purpose is simple but urgent:
To preserve, protect, and pass on our language, traditions, and knowledge systems to future generations through digitization, education, and collective action.

We believe our ancestors left us a rich inheritance, and it is our duty to ensure that inheritance does not get lost in time. By building an accessible digital repository, curating intergenerational resources, and creating learning platforms in both English and Cook Islands Māori, we are reclaiming our voice one word, one story, one generation at a time.

This is more than preservation.
This is revival.
This is resistance.
This is home.

Join us as we chart a new vaka forward, where Cook Islanders everywhere can reconnect, relearn, and reclaim the culture that shaped us.

Why this matters

Our reo is at risk. Our stories are fading. But together, we can build a future where our language lives, our culture thrives, and our identity is proudly passed on.

Our Vision
